Dear Diary - Day Minus 10 - Sunshine
After a pretty miserable summer in Salford Sims and I are suffering sunshine withdrawals. Now I know that everyone goes on about the dangers of sunbathing... quoting skin cancer as the inevitable consequence of any exposure to the sun. I think that this is propagated by the British Tourist Authority in an attempt to boost the number of visitors to Swansea.
Here's some facts:
Sunshine boosts levels of Seratonin in the body. Seratonin is the body's natural happy hormone.
Sunshine reduces levels of Melatonin in the body. Melatonin suppresses fertility and makes you tired.
A study in the BMA showed that more people die of heart conditions in the winter than in the summer.
Cholestrol levels rise in the winter.
Exposure to UVB rays reduces blood pressure and creates Vitamin D in our bodies.
A study by the US National Cancer Institute showed that high levels of sunshine reduced colon and breast cancer cases.
Finally. Sunlight encourages the production of white blood cells that boost the immune system and fight infection.
So, if we needed a reason, or two, to go on holiday in the Maldives we've got them.
