Don't Piss on their Coconut Trees!

A legend says that the first inhabitants of the Maldives died in great numbers, but a great sorcerer or fandita man made coconut trees grow out of the skulls of the buried corpses of the first settlers. Therefore the coconut tree is said to have an anthropomorphic origin according to Maldive lore. So, respect is due... find the back of a bush instead.

The tuna fish is said to have been brought to the Maldivian waters by a mythical seafarer (maalimi) called Bodu Niyami Kalēfanu who went close to the Dagas (the mythical tree at the end of the world) to bring this valuable fish. So don't turn your nose up at it... "Lovely, Tuna, Nice, Yum Yum ... But, tonight, I think I'll have the prawns...."

These myths tell that the end of the Maldives will be a great catastrophe where the islands will be submerged by the surrounding ocean. This is, in all likelihood, what will happen as a consequence of global warming... So maybe they were right about the other stuff too... Just sayin'

Of course, when you intimate all of your newly-learned local wisdom with the waiter or barman he'll look at you with a blank "what the hell are you on about?" stare. He'll smile politely and expect a much bigger tip than normal... 'cos he's probably from Bangladesh and he'll think that you're quite bonkers.
