I’m sure that, for many people, the idea of a stay on a tropical island conjures up mental images of walking in the footsteps of Robinson Crusoe. Whilst it is true that Robinson was marooned on a tropical island, the tropical island in Defoe’s story was probably Tobago; about 9,000 miles West of the Maldives.
Crusoe’s tale was, in all likelihood, inspired by the story of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island… in Fiji; 7,000 miles East of the Maldives (and 8,500 miles from Tobago).
I am lead to understand that both were stranded on an “all-inclusive” basis.
But, irrespective of which character you choose as inspiration for your dreams of living as a castaway with air-conditioning and a credit card, one thing’s for sure. they both had smashing hats; crafted from the products of the coconut tree.
Today little has changed in that respect. More than 60 clothing companies, including well known brands like Adidas, Eddie Bauer and Dockers, are using a material designed by a Colorado company which employs coconut shells to create clothes that dry faster, smell better and save energy while laundering. Unfortunately they don't appear to make those snazzy hats.
Whilst we're on the subject of coconut clothing, Amazon offers this tropically erotic lingerie… the coconut bra for $2.89.
So, when it rains, we’ll probably be found drilling holes in 34C coconut shells…
